JETS TAKE DETOUR FROM REVIS ISLAND; STRAINED HAMMY TO SIDELINE CORNERBACK
It looks as if Revis Island will be deserted at least for the Jets' Sunday night AFC East showdown with the Dolphins and possibly beyond.
Cornerback Darrelle Revis had an MRI exam yesterday that revealed a strain in his left hamstring, the injury that knocked him out of the second half of the Week 2 game against the Patriots.
"[The doctors] said it could take one to two weeks or football jersey
it could take a week; it depends on how my body recovers," Revis said.
The problem began last week when Revis felt a little tightness in the hamstring and was limited in practice late in the week.
He pulled up lame late in the second quarter on Sunday while chasing New England receiver Randy Moss as he was catching a 34-yard touchdown pass.
If Revis is unable to play against the Dolphins in South Florida (where he resides in the offseason), he said he believes it will be the first time he has ever missed a game at any level.
"This might be the first game . . . if I don't go, if we decide that I don't play," he said.
One thing appears certain: Coach Rex Ryan and the team doctors will err on the side of caution because they're bent on making sure this doesn't become a lingering, nagging issue throughout the season or that by playing too soon Revis might worsen the injury.
"With hamstrings you really can't tell," Ryan said. "Could he play nickel? Is it best to rest him? We've got to be smart with this one."
Revis said he's conscious about not making this situation worse by rushing back.
"Right now, we don't want to push it to where it's a problem where San Diego Chargers jersey
I've got to keep on coming out of the game or I can't practice," he said. "Right now, we're going to take our time with it and until I feel it's 100 percent and trainers feel I can go then I won't be out there. I'm not going to step on the field unless I actually feel 100 percent. Right now, it's tight. I can feel that it's tight and once I don't feel that tightness that's when I go back onto the field."
One factor that could make resting Revis for a game or two more palatable is the fact that their next two opponents - the Dolphins and Bills - are run-oriented teams and the Jets may believe they can get by without him.
Interestingly, the Jets defense actually played better against New England after Revis left the game. Randy Moss had no catches and Wes Welker had two catches for five yards in the second half.
"[Revis] wasn't there in the second half and we did fine," cornerback Dwight Lowery said. "We're experienced, in terms of not playing with him. Obviously, we want him to play, but at the same time it's not like we can't win without him in there."
Safety Jim Leonhard said being without Revis this summer helped prepare the Jets for this.
"Maybe the silver lining is the fact that we went through training camp without him and we kind of know the next step and the adjustments we have to make," Leonhard said. "Hamstrings are touchy for a corner. We need Darrelle and it's a long season.
"We're not going to risk something in Week 3 that would take him out for a month or two months down the line."
Revis insisted that he felt "100-percent" before the game and has no Chicago Bears jersey
regrets about playing.
Reacting to criticism he'll get that the holdout is the reason for his injury, Revis said: "I did what I needed to do to prepare. This is a phase right here. It's tough coming back from holding out and trying to get back into football shape. I'm in shape, but there's another shape called football shape where you're taking a lot of reps in training camp like my teammates did.
